Bubba Wallace
Bubba Wallace is one of the drivers who has put NASCAR as a sport and as an industry in the headlines in the motorsports world in both positive and negative ways. The No:23 Toyota Camry driver has been the poster boy of NASCAR in their efforts to bring in a new set of fans to the sport that is seeing a drop in the number of followers.
When Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan came forward with their plan to introduce their own NASCAR team they choose Bubba Wallace to be their flag bearer a decision that had both racing and cultural significance. The team gave Bubba Wallace the opportunity to compete at the highest level and fight for wins which he repaid by securing the team their first win at Talledega after rain washed away the race and first pole last weekend a first pole win at Michigan.
The future of two times Daytona 500 P2 finisher was in limbo after 23X1 Racing announced the signing of RCR driver Tyler Reddick, who is set to join the team in 2024 after his contract with RCR rubs out. The agreement 23X1 had with Kurt Busch assured the veteran the chance to race with the team until he chooses not to also put Bubba’s future in doubt.
But the 23X1 racing team is not yet ready to part ways with the sole African American driver on the grid as they have announced a multiyear contract extension which will surely see him stay with the team beyond 2023. Wallace going into the coming cup race at Richmond will be hoping to ride on the newly found confidence to secure his first win of the season that can assure him the playoff entry.
