2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott is known as one of the most capable road course racing drivers in the premier division. The stats speak for itself; he has won seven Road Course races in his career and is the third most accomplished driver in such tracks. HMS legend Jeff Gordan (9 wins) and SHR co-owner Tony Stewart (8 wins) are the drivers ahead of him.

But Chase Elliott refutes the claims that he is one of the best, if not the nest in the current grid. He credited the Chevy race car packages to the No:9 Hendrick Motorsports has delivered for him over the years for his success. Elliott is currently winless this season and desperately seeking a win. Fans expect him to win one of the two non-oval races coming, and this expectation is the reason why he spoke out.

While talking about the Richmond Cup race and his shot at winning, Elliott pointed out that he finds no difference in racing in ovals and non-ovals. He added that he often has been promoted as a great road course racer despite him insisting it was mostly due to the car. Elliott said that he races every track the same.

I don’t I don’t look at them any different than I look at Richmond this weekend personally. Yeah, like I had won a road course race, and a couple of years you know, we have we had a good run there for a little while. Everybody promoted me to be such a great road racer, and I tried to point to them, but that wasn’t the case,” Elliott told BVM Sports.

We just had some, you know, some really good package worked out, but nobody listened, and then now everybody thinks that I’m this great road racer. But you know, I look at the same as I look at Richmond, and the same is I look at, you know, the other races Michigan and places coming up too,” Elliott added.

The HMS driver finds himself alongside his teammate Alex Bowman in a difficult situation in the chase for playoffs due to missing races. The latter missed four races due to a spine injury, while the former missed six races following a tibia injury. Elliott also faced one race suspension for wrecking Denny Hamlin.

But Bill Elliott’s son has a champion mentality to the situation he has found himself in. He admitted that while missing such several racers was a big bummer and a first-ever experience, it was also an opportunity for him to find new grounds.

It’s definitely been a bummer to miss races and be in the position that we’re in some aspects, but in other aspects, I think it gives you the opportunity to kind of find new ground and learn more about yourself and your team as you go,” Elliott said.
