Kyle Larson’s effort to defend his Cup title in 2022 had a disappointing end after scoring just a P7 finish. The Californian who won the 2021 Cup after returning from a one-year ban dominated the Cup garage scoring 10 wins on his way to winning the title. Though the next-Gen car was a big constraint, Larson was expected to defend or at least remain in the chase until last season’s finale.

The No:5 team scored 3 wins last year, with one coming in the playoffs after his elimination. Larson failed to score a win while scoring back-to-back top 5s with ease. He had 13 top 5s in the 2022 season, most of them could have been converted to a win if not for small mistakes. If Larson wants to be the best, he has to produce a consistent season just like he did in 2021 and his teammate Chase Elliott had in the 2022 Regular season.

I would love for this year to get that consistency back. I’m not saying go out and win 10 races. I would love to, and I would love to win more than that, but I would just love to get our consistency back as we had in 2021. Yes, we won a lot, but even when we didn’t win, we were in the top five and contending,” Kyle Larson told Hendrick Motorsports.com.

This last year, we had the speed to definitely have the consistency, but we just made a lot of mistakes. A lot on my part, especially. Just try to clean those areas up and get a longer stretch of smooth, consistent races,” Kyle Larson added.

Kyle Larson’s crew chief Cliff Daniels pointed out that the driver and the crew are responsible for 2022 and will make amends to be the best in 2023. He said, “Kyle has admitted there are a few races he made mistakes in, and we had a few races where we made mistakes on pit road and didn’t execute there,”.

Larson has started his 2023 season string with a top 5 in the LA Clash and is looking to score the Daytona 500 win he has been logging for on February 19. He failed to finish the race in 2022 after starting on the pole. Kyle Larson and teammate Chase Elliott are part of the group of Cup champions with no Daytona 500 wins.

It would mean a lot. That’s our biggest race of the year—the most prestigious race and the one that everybody wants to win. I’ve gotten close one other time (in 2017). I ran out of fuel leading on the last lap. Bummed that I didn’t win that because you never know if you are going to have another opportunity, which I haven’t since then. I would love to win that big race and add my name to that winner’s list,” Kyle Larson said.
