Last night, WWE crowned its new undisputed universal champion in the form of Cody Rhodes. The 38-year-old dethroned the fabulous Roman Reigns and ended a drought of a new champion that lasted for more than 1000 days. Subsequently, NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. took to social media to praise the newly crowned champion for a magnificent show.
The 49-year-old, in a tweet, stated, “He finished the damn story”, where he referred to Rhodes, who claimed the only championship that his late father, Dusty Rhodes was unable to conquer. Thus, providing a sweet end to the decades-long Rhodes bloodline yearn for the WWE championship.
The match at Lincoln Financial Field began with a slow start. However, the pace soon ramped up, and multiple stars joined the wrestling stage, including The Undertaker and John Cena. This soon cleared out with the remaining duo of Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, which was subsequently won by the former. The match was viewed by millions worldwide, and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of them.
Cody Rhodes received his dad’s watch after the win
After winning the championship match, his father’s connection to WWE was being discussed among the fans. Subsequently, when Rhodes won completed his father’s dream, Bruce Prichard, Nick Khan, and Triple H gifted him his father’s watch.
When the 38-year-old was traversing through the backstage, he was interrupted by an array of WWE stars who gifted the wrestler a Rolex. Moreover, the Rolex was not an ordinary one, it carried the Rhodes bloodline along with it as it was the same watch that his father pawned to help his son join an acting school years ago.
Something that I wanted to share - I came to the back, and Bruce Prichard and Triple H and Nick Khan handed me this, which is the same watch that my dad had that he pawned so that I could go to acting school. So, the level of investment and responsibility that the company just put in my hands, I hope I can pay it back, pay it forward a hundred times over.Cody Rhodes said in the press conference, via WrestlePurists.
This piece of souvenir will stay close to Rhodes heart as it would bring back a lot of fond childhood memories with his father. However, his time in WWE is not over yet, and a set of new challenges await his way to defend his title of being the universal champion.
