Joe Gibbs Racing veteran driver Denny Hamlin has pointed out that he has no real excuses this season not to win his maiden NASCAR Cup title. The 23XI Racing co-owner finished P2 in the regular season championship behind his teammate Martin Truex Jr. He is one of the drivers with the most positive momentum going into the event.
Hamlin is the racer with the most Cup wins without securing the championship in history. He has won over 50 races since making his Cup debut with Joe Gibbs Racing 17 years ago. But the only thing that still makes the future Hall of Famer an undervalued driver is his lack of a title. The three-time Daytona 500 winner believes 2023 is his year, a belief he had about all 16 seasons he has raced earlier.
When asked about his chances of winning the championship four race at Phoenix and securing the title ahead of the Darlington playoff race, he pointed out that he believes he has a shot. He pointed out that 2023 has been stronger for them than ever, and his pit crew has also been solid this year. Since all the puzzle pieces were there, he had no real excuses not to deliver.
“I do. I think that we’re stronger than we’ve been. Road courses, I’ve got speed now and short tracks our cars – if we get to the final four, I’m not worried about being at a deficit. I think the pit crew is better; they’re coming into it’s own. All the pieces of the puzzle are there. There’s no excuses for sure.” Hamlin said, as reported by Speedwaydigest.

Denny Hamlin names his toughest competition for the title
The No:11 Toyota Camry driver pointed out that his teammate, Martin Truex Jr., who has a 15-point cushion going into the first round of the postseason. Hamlin claimed that his teammate can deliver by doing half the work he does and is a tough man to beat.
“I think so. I think Martin (Truex Jr.) is certainly — he’s a talented dude. He can sometimes put in about a quarter of the work I do and still outrun me. He’s just a gifted race car driver, and he’s always tough. That’s why he’s a champion,” Hamlin said.
Truex Jr., who won the 2017 Cup title, knows how to finish the job, unlike Hamlin, who has always slipped on the final step. But when the motivation and hunger of both drivers are compared, Hamlin has the advantage solely because he has never done it. The teammate battle will be a feat to witness for the fans.
