Denny Hamlin claims Kyle Busch’s off-track behavior cost him his JGR seat
Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch
Kyle Busch will end his 15-year-long partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing after the 2022 season finale at Phoenix. He will rejoin chevy at Richard Childress Racing. He has signed a multi-year deal with RCR. Busch’s Truck series outfit KBM will also make the switch to Chevy.
Kyle Busch’s exit from JGR came after a lengthy contract extension drama. Joe Gibbs failed to secure a suitable replacement for the No:18 car’s outgoing sponsor, M&M. Busch’s long-time teammate, veteran Denny Hamlin, has come forward, claiming it was the latter’s off-track behavior that cost him the TRD seat.
Hamlin told Danica Patrick in her podcast that no one hates Kyle Busch’s on-track runs. He added that it’d been a challenge for Busch off track. Hamlin said, “No one hates Kyle on the race track. No one is like, ‘He’s a dirty driver.’ Everyone loves Kyle and what he brings to our sport on the race track. It’s just off the race track that has been challenging for Kyle,”.
Denny Hamlin pointed out that the off-track behavior affected Busch’s relationship with Gibbs, just like it did with Rick Hendrick. He said, “I think that, honestly, this is why he’s probably making another team move. The relationship with Hendrick and then with Gibbs didn’t end because of his on-track performance. It really started to take its toll off the race track, I think, for the race teams. It was tough,”.
Kyle Busch is disappointed with JGR’s false promises
In the latest episode of the NBC documentary series Race for The Championship, Kyle Busch expressed his disappointment towards JGR for the exit. He was promised the chance to retire at JGR. To his dismay, it turned out to be false promises. His two championship wins for JGR weren’t enough to keep him with TRD.
“It would be nice not to go through this again. This suck…Not from all the words we were given for years of ‘You’re our guy,’ ‘You’re our franchise,’ ‘You’re going to retire here,’ all that sort of stuff. So those were a lot of — what do you call it — false promises. That’s the scary piece,” Kyle Busch said.
Kyle Busch’s dismay doubled as JGR was his family for 15 years. He had the full support of Joe Gibbs, even in his dumbest moments. Everything suddenly flipped and went south for the veteran. It’s an experience Busch never expected to face at JGR.
“Something is so disappointing to me and so hurtful about this whole situation with JGR is they were like family. For 15 years, Joe had my back. In the stupidest of moments, Kyle Busch was like he was there for me. And it’s gone. Like it just flipped. And gone. And it’s like nothing I’ve ever been a part of,” Kyle Busch added.
