Within the span of hours, Joe Gibbs Racing garage went from having the best times of their life to having the worst during the time between Cup and Xfinity series season finale in 2022. JGR youngster and owner Joie Gibbs’s grandson Ty Gibbs dominantly won the second-tier championship and boosted the confidence of his Cup counterpart Christopher Bell’s championship chase. But an hour after the celebration JGR co-owner Coy Gibbs, Ty’s father, passed away.

The entire JGR and NASCAR garage was shocked to learn about the news. Ty Gibbs, who was supposed to drive the No:23 Toyota Camry of 23XI Racing on the Phoenix finale, joined his family in mourning the death. Bell, who had fought the emotional baggage of the loss, went to finish P3 in the championship.

The young Gibbs is still working on moving on from his father’s death, and media enquiring about it during the interviews was hard to handle for the youngster. Now his new teammate and JGR veteran Denny Hamlin has sent a strong message to the media, who might ask such questions via his Twitter page sharing JGR’s official statement.

As we start the new season, I want to thank the NASCAR community for their support of our family during these difficult times throughout the past couple of months. We are still working through the grieving process, and it is still extremely difficult to discuss. While we are excited to start the new racing season, we hope everyone can continue to respect the privacy of our family,” JGR stated in a release.
