After a tumultuous NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs race at Martinsville, emotions ran high, sparking a fiery exchange between Sheldon Creed and Andy Petree, the vice president of competition for Richard Childress Racing (RCR). The controversy centered on Creed’s aggressive racing tactics, which led to an incident involving his RCR teammate, Austin Hill. Creed’s actions ultimately sent Hill into a spin, dashing both drivers’ hopes of clinching a coveted spot in the Championship 4.

The race’s climactic ending saw an overtime restart, igniting a thrilling two-lap dash to the finish. Teammates Austin Hill and Sheldon Creed’s fierce competition took a costly turn when Creed’s aggressive move caused Hill to spin into a chaotic crash. Justin Allgaier won by a mere 0.032 seconds, securing his Championship 4 spot. However, Creed’s actions not only knocked him out of contention but also shattered Hill’s Championship 4 dreams.

Creed is set to leave the RCR camp after the final race this season and is likely to join JGR. As the race concluded, Sheldon Creed was in the pit road, reflecting on the race. It was at this moment that Andy Petree, vice president of competition for Richard Childress Racing, unleashed a tirade of disapproval directed at Creed. Amid this emotional exchange, Sheldon Creed didn’t back down. He retorted as Petree was walking away; Sheldon yelled:

If he touched me, you wouldn’t have said sh*t.

When asked what Andy Petree had said, Creed maintained that Andy Petree’s anger stemmed from his racing style and how he had treated the No. 21 car during the race. He defended his actions by highlighting that he had allowed the No. 21 team to secure a second or third-place finish.

Fans have mixed opinions on the yelling

However, Creed quickly pointed out a perceived double standard within the team. He alluded to the fact that when roles were reversed, such criticism wasn’t forthcoming. It was evident that Creed believed his impending departure from RCR played a significant role in the backlash he faced, suggesting that some of the ire might be a consequence of his decision to part ways with the team.

The internet buzzed with clips shared by Toby Christie, revealing high-ranking figure Petree berating his racer, sparking fan outrage. RCR faced criticism for its perceived lack of culture, with fans labeling Austin Hill as their golden kid. A fan even claimed that RCR are bent over backwards for Hill. Some argued that championship ambitions justified the incident and absolved Sheldon Creed.

Another faction contended that if Creed wasn’t a part of RCR, the team’s direction was unclear and welcomed his departure. Opinions varied, but some justified Andy’s outburst, attributing blame to Creed for the accident, a stark departure from his usual demeanor. A few sections of fans were just happy to see the drama unfold.

The dust settled to reveal Sam Mayer, John-Hunter Nemechek, Cole Custer, and Justin Allgaier as the surviving contenders. With the field narrowed, these drivers now prepare for a head-to-head showdown, each aiming for ultimate glory and the distinction of being crowned the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion.
