Joe Gibbs Racing driver and 23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin made history at Pocono by entering the elite list of NASCAR drivers with over 50 cup race wins. But like a handful of his wins throughout his career, the win on Sunday was marred with controversy, with the supposedly “Chastained” 2021 Cup champion Kyle Larson for the win.
The incident between Larson and Hamlin occurred during the restart, with just seven laps left in the race. The No:11 Toyota Camry ran the No:5 Chevy Camaro ZL1 to the outside wall. He was squeezed too much that he had no option but to hit that wall, which ruined his day. Larson was dropped from the top to P20 at the end of the race. Ross Chastain has done the same on Hamlin to win a Cup race.
Kyle Larson did come back to express his frustration with his friend, though Hamlin has “never raced him as a friend” on the track after another caution unrelated to their incident. He drove alongside the three-time Daytona 500 winner and hit him on the driver’s side. Larson was disappointed that he couldn’t secure extra playoff points because of Hamlin’s antics.
“He gave me a real push down the frontstretch and I was nervous of the move that happened because he made it work on Ross (Chastain) last year, and he dirtied him u…I got used up. It’s just unfortunate. I feel like we’ve had a handful of run-ins; I’ve never had to reach out to apologize,” Kyle Larson said after the race.
Denny Hamlin refused to take the blame for the incident and said, “We’re racing for the win, are you (expletive) me? If I’m going to give anyone respect, it’s Kyle Larson just because I respect him as a race car driver, and I think he’s probably the best. Certainly, he’s got my respect.”

The NASCAR Cup fans on Twitter had a strong reaction to the incident. Larson is a crowd favorite, and the victim of the incident meant Hamlin wasn’t getting away from criticism from fans online. The same occurred as most were ruthless while sharing their thoughts on Hamlin. Few fans labeled the incident as just another racing incident.
