Chase Elliott, the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Hendrick Motorsports driver, has proven to be a brilliant road course racer during his time in the NASCAR Cup Series. Although, he finished runner-up in the Brickyard 200 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday. Elliott had missed even Cup races this season and was desperate for the win to secure a playoff spot. Though he had the car and talent to win the race, things did not go as expected.
Chase Elliott, Michael McDowell, and Daniel Suarez made their final pit stop on lap 50. The latter was affected by air hose issues. Meanwhile, McDowell had a three-second lead over Elliott and won the race by 0.937 seconds. The 27-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver was upset as he almost had the win. After all, he has seven Cup wins on road courses and tried to claim his eighth.
Chase Elliott was disappointed as they had a good car and could not take it to the victory lane. After the race, he told the media he wished he had more time. He stated, “Just needed just a little bit more, and came up a bit short. But congrats to Michael, man.” Eliott praised McDowell for doing a good job and staying mistake-free. Though he was happy for the race winner, Elliott was gutted for not winning.
Here is how the NASCAR fans reacted to Chase Elliott’s runner-up finish
The fans had mixed reactions to Chase Elliott’s race. Some of them sympathized with him, and others mocked him. “Road course king my ass,” and “Skill issue I’m afraid!” were two comments. However, other fans supported him by saying, “fuel for next week.” Next weekend is The Glen, where he secured two of his road course wins. His fans encouraged him to take this weekend’s defeat as fuel for next week and win the race.
“He’s got one more shot at The Glen,” “Just needed one more lap,” and “Gotta love the hate for Chase Elliot because he’s popular. Cope” were some comments. Toward the end of the race, Elliott closed the gap to the race leader McDowell. Sadly, that was not enough, and the fans wished he had one more lap left. Take a look at other reactions below.
After the race, Chase Elliott spoke about how he felt, and he believed the pit stops were going to be crucial and determine the race result. Meanwhile, Mike Rockenfeller, who replaced Noah Gragson at Legacy Motor Club, apologized to Elliott if he cost him a second in the race. It has not been the ideal season for Elliott, as he missed seven races and was suspended for one. However, it is not the end. There is no doubt he can make a comeback soon.
