Rand Paul, the junior United States senator from Kentucky since 2011, has taken it to Twitter to ask NASCAR to return to Kentucky Speedway. Paul is one of the top leaders of the GOP and is an ally of former president Donald Trump. The track has been inactive since the premier stock car racing track left in 2020. It was the last year it hosted a race organized about any of the three national series.
The track’s $153 million worth of construction ended in 2000 and, since then, has hosted races from all premier series. This includes Cup, Xfinity, Truck, and ARCA races of NASCAR and IndyCar and Indy Lights races. Speedway Motorsports, LLC currently runs the 1.5 miles tri-oval. The same firm holds several other premier oval tracks.
Rand Paul took it to Twitter and shared his opinion. He shared a YouTube short of the incredible last-lap battle between Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch in the 2019 edition of the race. The older Busch emerged victorious in his CGR Chevy.
4 years ago today, we witnessed an epic finish at Kentucky Speedway NASCAR. It’s time to bring it back! #BringBackKYSpeedway.Rand Paul Tweeted.
Kentucky Speedway is a track with a unique history when it comes to race winners. The track has witnessed Cup champions getting into the Cup victory lane until the final race, where rookie Cole Custer scored a win. A Cup champion scored every race win before the 2020 race. Brad Keselowski, with three Cup race, wins, is the most successful driver at the track.
Here is how NASCAR Twitter reacted to Rand Paul’s tweet
Fans online had a mixed reaction to the Republican senator’s demand. This has to do with how the track has produced two good finishes for racing while every other race hosted was underwhelming in terms of entertainment.
The race in the following years witnessed a significant drop in attendance. Some fans suggested reconfiguring the tri-oval to a short track and re-brand it.
It’s clear that Kentucky isn’t one of the tracks NASCAR fans is eager to see a return of. Many seems to be in agreement that track has a poor history over race products and there is no way the current generation of cars can make a diffrence their.
