For the first time in the history of NASCAR, since the inception of the Chase for the Championship system, a non-Championship-4 driver won the Cup season finale. Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain produced an impressive race to score his second win of the 2023 season. He celebrated the victory with his signature style of smashing the watermelon on the track.
The last time a non-championship chaser won the finale was in 2013 when Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin won the finale at Homestead Miami. Chastain produced a masterclass of a race that saw him hold off eventual Champion Ryan Blaney. It was an aggressive battle at the end that saw the Penske Racing driver going all out for the win.
The race win of Chastain was impressive, considering the compositely clean race he had against Blaney. He was cautious and race with respect. Chastain’s final goal was to win the race without ruining Blaney’s race, and he accomplished it. It helps Chastain to redeem himself after an underwhelming playoff run he had this season.
I know he was mad, and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then, I do not care now. I'm here to race him. I'm not going to wreck him. I was not going to crash him, I was not going to use by front bumper, side fenders, anything. But dirty air? Different story. I'm going to keep the lead because that's everything.Chastain said, grinning, as reported by AP.
Here is how fans on X reacted to Ross Chastain’s victory
Fans on social media had a mixed reaction to Blaney scoring the win on Sunday. Some quickly pointed out that the Trackhouse driver’s win was insignificant, considering all the limelight went to champion Ryan Blaney for his championship win.
Some fans saw the funny side of the victory and came up with hilarious tweets discussing Chastain’s win and his signature celebration. Fans also didn’t hesitate to appreciate Chastain for his respectful racing and wished him best wishes for the 2024 season.

Congratulations on the win Ross!!!they couldn’t even give you an interview nascar and this format has become a joke. This is why I stopped watching the playoffs. Just tuned in for the last 20 laps this track is the second worst next to Pocono.

I wish there was a way for drivers to get back into the playoffs by winning. That would give more incentive to keep trying, like RC did in the final.

Only 2 non-chase drivers won in the playoffs this year.
Chastain outshined the champions????????????

The only driver to make that race interesting.

Blaney won the championship. Quit doing your burnouts and let the champion have the stage. Kinda pathetic really with no situational awareness
