“Women beating back marker who won’t do sh*t in the sport”- Fans ridicule NASCAR’s decision to reinstate Cody Ware after dropped felony charges
Lawsuits unveiled substantial losses for the team of $3.5 million in sponsorship and $300,000 on replacement drivers.
Cody Ware
NASCAR has officially reinstated Cody Ware to the Cup Series after his suspension in April, which followed an incident involving his then-girlfriend. The sanctioning body lifted the suspension four days after the dismissal of felony assault charges against Ware and his ex-girlfriend. This news was shared on X, by NASCAR and it ignited a lot of fan reactions.
The charges were dropped as both parties chose not to cooperate with prosecutors, leading the Iredell County district attorney’s office to cite a lack of testimony for their inability to proceed. Ware’s arrest in April stemmed from allegations including pushing his girlfriend to the floor, slapping her, strangulation attempts, throwing a phone at her, and issuing threats. His ex-girlfriend faced a charge of simple assault in September, and both sets of charges were dropped in December.
Following the reinstatement, Ware expressed relief, stating that he had maintained his innocence throughout the process. The 28-year-old driver has been open about his battles with anxiety and depression. Ware, associated with Rick Ware Racing since his Cup Series debut in 2017, has nearly 100 career starts with one top-10 finish.
The lawsuits filed by the team against Ware’s ex-girlfriend, claiming false statements to the police, highlight the financial toll of the incident, citing a loss of $3.5 million in sponsorship and over $300,000 spent on replacement drivers. NASCAR’s decision to reinstate Ware comes amid the resolution of legal proceedings, allowing him to resume his racing career.
Fans predict Cody Ware’s return means crashes or last place
Upon the revelation on X, fan discontent erupted, manifested through vehement comments and symbolic flares. The collective sentiment within the fandom was one of indignation, triggered by the news of an individual, previously charged with domestic abuse, set to return to the racing grid. Detractors cited a pattern in the driver’s career, emphasizing a propensity for crashes and consistently finishing at the rear.
Criticism extended beyond the driver, as certain comments targeted NASCAR itself, accusing the organization of a perceived bias towards individuals with a history of misconduct, exemplified by references to Jeremy Mayfield. Allegations were made against Rick Ware, the owner of Rick Ware Racing and father to the driver in question, suggesting monetary influence played a role in the driver’s reinstatement.
A faction of fans contended that a driver with such a checkered past would find limited to none of the appeal among racing teams. One individual even went ahead by labeling Ware was merely a “women beating back marker who won’t do sh*t in the sport.”

NASCAR loves to reinstate abusers/accused abusers (Kurt Busch/Cody Ware) but won’t let Jeremy Mayfield be reinstated due to breaking the rules of using substance drugs and testing positive for it. Got it. Sends a bad and horrible message, NASCAR https://t.co/PywSZqPCU3

Kids, don’t try this at home. Unlike in NASCAR, in the REAL world if you strangle a woman nearly to death you will go to prison for a very long time. Forget about your career. https://t.co/jp4YVqnbcd
