“Response by the fire crew was embarrassing”- Fans slam NASCAR safety team after delayed response to Zane Smith’s Truck catching on fire post-burnout
COTA was the second win Smith scored in 2023; his first win came in the Daytona season opener.
Zane Smith's car on fire at COTA
NASCAR COTA Road Course weekend has already produced some high-octane drama. The latest on the list is the Truck race winner Zane Smith’s car catching on fire after he did the celebratory burnout. Smith’s win was historic as he became the first back-to-back race winner at COTA. His record was later matched his record matched by A.J. Allmendinger in the Xfinity series.
Zane Smith went too hard on the burnout as he was ecstatic to score the win over All-time win record-holder veteran Kyle Busch. “Besides catching on fire in victory, that was a first for me. Man, that’s a bummer right there… That’s easily the most hectic victory lane celebration I have ever had, and I apologize for catching the truck on fire in victory lane,” Smith said after the incident.
His No:38 Front, Raw Motorsports trucks mudflaps, was the part that caught on fire. While the fire was quickly put out once the burnout smoke cleared, and everyone got aware of it, NASCAR fans online are concerned with the response time of the rescue team. They pointed out that the officials should have been more vigilant in the matter.

Zane Smith credits his crew chief for the impressive win
Smith was quick to credit his crew chief Lawson for helping him to secure back-to-back wins. He said, “Shout out to Chris Lawson for an amazing strategy,” It helped Smith to extend his championship advantage and solidify his claims for the 2023 Championship win.
He pointed out that the win was a testament to the No:38 team’s abilities. He said, “So cool for (sponsors) Speedco, Peak, and all our partners. It was fast when it mattered. I just enjoy coming to all the road courses, especially here. So cool. Just a true testament to this team,”.
He added that having Kyle Busch chasing him behind was extra motivation to run perfectly. Smith said, “Once we got to that eight-to-go point and I was told Kyle (Busch) was in second, my heart rate went up a little bit, just because he’s so good at managing his stuff when it mattered. So, I just tried not to make any mistakes,”.
