Hershel McGriff Sr. is a professional stock car racing driver from the United States. He was a long-time contender in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, formerly known as the Winston West Series, and earned the series championship in 1986. He is also a four-time Grand National winner. At 90, he competed in his final NASCAR race at Tucson Speedway in the NASCAR Pro Series West. In 2018, he drove the No. 04 Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing.
Hershel McGriff had the longest competitive streak of any driver in NASCAR history. At 22, he competed in his debut race, the 1950 Southern 500, in the NASCAR premier series’ sophomore season. At 84, he competed in his final NASCAR race at Sonoma Raceway in the NASCAR KEN Pro Series West. In between: a lot of greatness. McGriff raced in 28 NASCAR premier series seasons, winning four races, all in 1954. But in what is now the NASCAR KEEN Pro Series West, McGriff demonstrated a level of excellence that elevated him to the ranks of the series’ all-time greats.

Shortly after racing restarted in the United States following World War II, McGriff raced for the first time on September 16, 1945 race the first time on September 16, 1945. In 1950, he won the first Carrera Panamericana, where he met NASCAR founder Bill France, Sr. France persuaded McGriff to come south and compete in NASCAR races at Daytona Beach, Darlington Raceway, Detroit, and Raleigh. In 1954, France persuaded McGriff to become a full-time NASCAR driver. He won four times in the Grand National series that year, the first at Bay Meadows Speedway.
For the 1955 season, McGriff was given the opportunity to participate in NASCAR for wealthy Carl Kiekhaefer’s newly created team. McGriff opted to return to the West Coast to be closer to his family and to take care of his expanding timber and mill business. Tim Flock drove Kiekhaefer’s Chrysler 300 to 18 victories and the season championship that year. McGriff returned to racing after a hiatus of about ten years. In 1967, he began 41st at Riverside.

At the age of 61, he became the oldest driver to win a NASCAR feature race. When he won an AutoZone West Series race in 1989. His 14 victories at the now-defunct Riverside International Raceway are the most at NASCAR-sanctioned events. He served as grand marshal for the track’s final race in 1988. In the NASCAR Suzuka Thunder Special, he started 26th and finished 25th. He announced his retirement at the end of the 2002 season. In 2002, McGriff was recognized in the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame in its inaugural class. At the age of 90, he revealed plans to run the K&N West races at Tucson Speedway in 2018. He became the oldest individual to compete in a NASCAR-sanctioned event.
