‘I did a pretty near-perfect job,’ Kyle Larson claims that if not for the minor mistake in the last lap he would have won the Talladega Cup Race

The Superspeedway races or plate races always have been an Achilles heel for Kyle Larson who won the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Championship in a dominant passion with hiccups in the plate races. But all that is now things of the past for Kyle Larson as the defending champion produced one of his career-best performances at Talladega and if not for a small mistake he would have bagged the win.
Coming to the Turn 4 of the race in the final lap Kyle Larson who was at P2 behind Erik Jones had the momentum to go for the win but his advance on Erik was quickly blocked which gave Ross Chastain the eventual race winner and Austin Dillon an ambient time to take the lead in the respective order.
Kyle Larson himself acknowledged pre-race on Saturday he has less expertise in racing on Superspeedways saying “I’ve tried a bunch of different ways, and nothing’s seemed to work out to this point. I don’t know what the right way to race these things is,”.
Now after his 32-lap lead which is more than twice of laps he led In his previous starts at Superspeedways, making Talladega his best palate race run Kyle Larson has come forth suggesting that he had a near-perfect run and if not for the mistakes he would have won the race.

Kyle Larson was more than happy about his P4 finish at Talladega as he acknowledged that he believes he drove near perfect until the last lap. He went on to suggest that he should have taken the lead from Erik Jones when he made the move as he had the momentum to do that and the inexperience in the superspeedways cost him there.
“I feel like I did a pretty near-perfect job for me at a superspeedway until the last lap there. I should have, like, I think just kind of faked going high, then went back low. I had that run. Ross helped me with that run. It kind of baited me into going outside. Just a little inexperience probably there,” Kyle Larson said.
Kyle Larson went on to say that he had a great car and is proud of the team for the performance. The Hendrick Motorsport man added that it was the first time he had legit shot at winning a plate race and that he is happy about his exact position at the final laps. Kyle Larson added that he felt like he did a great job with patience and if not for some small mistake committed at the end, he would have been the champion.
“I’m really proud of my team. We did a great job executing all race long. The car was great. I felt like we could push people great. I felt like we could receive pushes well. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve had a legit shot at winning a plate race in the Cup Series. Happy about that. When you’re close, I was in the exact position I wanted to be in, I didn’t want to be leading,” Kyle Larson said.
“I felt like I did a good job with patience and stuff. Made one small mistake there and it cost me the win,” Kyle Larson added.
