The Kansas Speedway had an iconic last lap run to offer for the fans as the former Cup Champions battled it out on the 1.5-mile oval dominating the rest of the grid in their search for the race win. The senior-most racer of the front three came out victorious as 23X1 Racing’s Kurt Busch held off Hendrick Motorsport driver Kyle Larson and Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch.
Kyle Larson led 18 laps in the race and was running in the Top 5 most of the race. He got the lead to himself in the final restart of the race, after Kurt Busch was relegated to P4due to a small misshape in his pit stop under caution, by overtaking Kyle Busch as soon as the race started. The Busch brothers were hot on Kyle Larson’s tail since and were slowly catching up to him as the race closed to the last lap.
In the 237th lap, Kurt Busch made an advance on his younger brother securing him the P2 spot and started chasing Larson. He was able to catch up and finally pass the defending cup champion with just 8 laps left in the race as Larson was edged out by 1,43 seconds at the finish line by the no:45 car.
Now Kyle Larson has come forth to express his thoughts on how the race went down for him and the experience of getting chase by the Busch’s in the final laps.
Find out what Kyle Larson said
Kyle Larson acknowledged that he was racing for a win in Kansas but he trying too hard to hold on to the lead in the last few laps of the race put him in a tight situation. He went on to it was fun racing Kurt Busch as he made Larson work hard the whole time and at some stage was actually got in the situation where he could have spun himself and kept on fighting.
“I mean, we were racing for the win there. He never got into me, so I’m trying to squeeze the throttle to get position on him and just got tight. That was fun racing with Kurt (Busch). You know, in the last half of the race I was trying hard the whole time. I about spun out in front of him there at some point in the third stage and then we just kept fighting through it,” Kyle Larson said.
Kyle Larson went on to thank his team for the “war machine” they built for him. Kyle Larson the listed out the struggles he faced which also includes him hitting the wall multiple times as he could get his car less tight on the turns to avoid approaching the wall and keeping the loaned speed up. He added that his team will be looking into the issues and will start working on them. Kyle Larson acknowledged that he knew it is hard to hold off Kyle Busch and when Kurt Busch got upfront as P2 he was sure that it will be much harder and he did his best to come out with a win but failed to do so.
“Thanks to my team for building me a war machine. I hit the wall a lot today and just struggled like people could put air on me and get me really tight and I hit the wall. We’ll work on that and figure it out, but happy with my car. It was hard to hold off Kyle (Busch) and then I knew when Kurt got by, I knew it was going to be really hard to hold him off. I did my best but came up one spot short,” Kyle Larson added.
