The NASCAR cup series will make history this coming weekend at Gateway as it will hit the Gateway alias the World-Wide Technology Raceway at Illinois for the 15th round of cup racing in the 1.25-mile oval. The race is expected to produce wild runs considering the shorter track-like nature of the track which challenges drivers with more shifting as the run to secure playoff spots heats up.

William Byron the No:24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver will hit the inaugural Gateway cup race this weekend hoping to get his incredible run back into the track after his recent struggles to secure the finishes he deserves. The Atlanta and Martinsville winner is yet to finish inside the top 10 following his second win and the last race weekend at Charlotte also was a disappointment for the youngster.  

The 24-car driver was is part of the group of drivers consisted Denny Hamlin and Ross Chastain to win more than one race this season and has now come forth expressing his concerns and opinion on the coming cup are at the Gateway.

William Byron acknowledged that he is unsure about what to expect this weekend at WWTR and sad that he thinks the race will act similar to the Phoenix raceway. He went on to say that having some good pace at Phoenix earlier this season will be a good starting point for them and added that efficient usage of the full 50-minute practice this Friday will really help in figuring out and getting the feel of the track.

I don’t know what to expect this weekend really. I think Gateway will race similar to how Phoenix (Raceway) does. We had some speed there earlier this year so I think we have a good starting point, plus we have a full 50-minute practice this Friday to really feel things out,” William Byron said.

William Byron went on to say it’s been a few years since he has raced in the Gateway but all of his outings in those tracks were fruitful in terms of speed and laps led. He pointed out that the last few weeks have been not that exciting for him as he failed to get the expected finishes even after running upfront so he expects this Sunday will be the turnaround they need.

It’s been a few years since I’ve raced there, and when I did, we had a good race going and led a bunch of laps. The last few weeks we haven’t gotten the results we’ve wanted despite leading laps and running up front. This weekend is a good chance for us to turn that around heading into the summer stretch of the season,” William Byron added.

The No:24 crew chief Rudy Fugle acknowledged that the mile-and-a-quarter long Gateway track though seems like a usual 1.25-mile track is more of a short track with long straightaways. He went on to say that he is confident heading into the race weekend at the gateway as the Next-Gen cars of HMS usually have quite a good pace in such kinds of tracks.

Gateway may be a mile-and-a-quarter long but it races more like a short track with long straightaways. So far this season with the Next-Gen car, we have been fast on those style tracks so that gives us confidence heading into this weekend,” Rudy Fugle said.

Rudy Fugle went on to say that since the track is such a unique one it’s hard to figure out what to do which is something he enjoys as a crew chief and added that the track position is going to be vital in their efforts to take up a win. He went on to add that the pitstops will be playing a major part in the coming race.

It’s a unique track that’s tough to figure out and those are the challenges I enjoy as a crew chief. I think it’s safe to say that track position is going to be a major factor this weekend and that pit stops are going to be a major key to that,” Rudy Fugle added.
