Joe Gibbs Racing had a mixed set of results in their first race of the post-season at Darlington as the team saw two of their drivers exiting the race due to mechanical issues with their Camry while the other finished inside the top 5. The JGR contingent was bombarded with questions regarding their Next-Gen Toyota’s reliability as the race came to an end.

Denny Hamlin produced a solid outing for JGR by finishing P2 after he failed to catch race winner and former JGR outcast Erik Jones while Christopher Bell finished P5. At the same time, the ex-champion duo of Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch saw their race ending early following engine failure.

Martin Truex Jr. who missed out on the playoff due to his winless run once again say misfortune striking his Nio:19 team as he became the first of the two to suffer engine troubles when he was leading the race ahead of Kyle Busch. Busch took over the lead after Truex Jr.’s misfortune but couldn’t keep it for long as he had the same fate ahead of him.

Denny Hamlin talking about his teammate’s disappointing end to the race acknowledged that though he was worried about the fact that he might also have the same fate he was ready to race the car until the engine is blown. He added that according to the No:11 team Kyle Busch might have had an early mis-shift which prompted his DNF.

I can’t control it, so I’ll run it until it blows if it blows. I think [Busch] might have missed a shift at some point during the day — at least that’s what my team said. That late in the day, obviously unfortunate for the No. 18,” Denny Hamlin said.

He further went on to address his race day as he pointed out that he did well in keeping the track position and was catching the field plowing his Camry tight. He added that his long-run pace was good and he really liked where he ended up in the last green flag stop and thereafter.

“I plowed tight. We did really well keeping our track position; we really needed this race to go green. When we went long, we were just catching the field. My long run pace was so good, and then we fired off extremely fast on that last green flag stop, and I really liked where we were at,” says Denny Hamlin.
