“I’m surprised at this point that we haven’t been able to get that finished” Joe Gibbs on Kyle Busch’s contract situation with JGR
Kyle Busch and Joe Gibbs
Kyle Busch without any doubt has been the best driver to ever pilot a Toyota car in the NASCAR cup series and his two championship wins and 60 race wins speaks for themselves. Busch drove the No:18 Toyota Camry of Joe Gibbs Racing, the prominent Toyota team of the grid two times topping the championship victory lane the first time in 2015 and again in 2019. But Team-Toyota is close to losing out their best driver as the contract extension between the driver and the team is yet to take place.
Kind of seems like absurdity or mere ignorance from Joe Gibbs Racing as they are moving at this pace regarding the contract extension of Kyle Busch. Though the team has publicly come out multiple times to acknowledge that they have no intention to part away with Busch same as the driver who said he wants to continue here itself, things are not going well in the background it seems.
JGR is still searching for the vest sponsor that can replace M&M which has been the premier sponsor for Kyle Busch over the last two decades and it seems like they are having a hard time doing it which seems absurd enough. And to the dismay of JGR, Busch has recently revealed the fact that he has been approached by other cup teams enquiring about his availability in the future, which has now prompted the reaction of team owner Joe Gibbs.
Find out what Joe Gibbs said
Joe Gibbs acknowledged that it’s been hard for him to learn about Kyle being approached by other teams as they have been working hard to get things done. He pointed out that there are a lot of things to put in place before they go forward with the signing and acknowledged that he is surprised about the fact that the situation hasn’t been yet resolved.
“Yeah, I am in a way. It’s been hard. We’re working really hard to try and get things done, and it is hard, though. You’ve got to put a lot in place to make things work out, and we’re working as hard as we can. We’re going after it, in a number of different directions. So yeah, I’m surprised at this point that we haven’t been able to get that finished,” Joe Gibbs said.
He went on to talk about how Busch’s situation is resonating with the No:18 team saying when a reporter asked about whether it has caused any turmoil to the team to which he replied saying “turmoil” is not the right word for it as it’s just a struggle the team is facing. He points out that it’s something that happens in pro sports, something that everyone likes, and points out shows the hardness of being at the top of pro sports.
“I hope “turmoil” is not a good word for it, because you’re the media guy, so give me a better word, will you? Maybe ‘struggle” or something right now. But I think that happens in pro sports. I think that’s the reason why we all like it so much. It’s hard. It takes a lot up here,” Joe Gibbs added.
Joe Gibbs went on to say that the thing that is the hardest for JGR is making sure that they have all four teams going in the right direction which is different from other team sports as it’s about just one team. He added that he enjoys the hardship that comes with it and suggested that they are in the right direction going forward and they just need Martin Truex Jr. to get to the playoff by winning a race.
“The thing that is probably the hardest is to get four teams going in the right direction. In other sports, you only have to get one. It is really hard. But I think I kind of enjoy that part of it, but it is hard, and hopefully, we’ll get ourselves going in a little better direction now. This was a big deal for us for sure, and so hopefully we can get a few more wins. We need to get Martin in, too,” Joe Gibbs explained.
