The NASCAR cup series will enter the third round of playoff this weekend and the racing heat is expected to get high as none among the playoff grid has secured a win in the final two races. The 16-man playoff line-up failed to make it to the victory lane losing in the first week to Erik Jones and then to Bubba Wallace the next week.

Anong the 16 men line up for the playoff five drivers are former champions while four are making their playoff debut. Everyone on the grid has a genuine shot at the championship with the Next-Gen cars, for the post-season debutants, it will be there moment to shine and progress until they have the final glory at there hand.

Jeff Burton who always has been one of the championship contenders throughout his NASCAR career was never able to make it into the cup series and attain the final glory. He has lived the underdog story many times but couldn’t get it done in the end. But the racer turned NBC commentator has come forth expressing his opinion that he sees such a story being written this season.

Jeff Burton pointed out that he doesn’t see things calming down in the playoff and added that he doesn’t know which drivers will step up in the postseason. He added that he sees an underdog championship story this season as in the Phoenix Championship 4 race though he has no idea who will make it till there.

I can’t imagine things will calm down. I don’t know who the drivers and teams are that will step up. I don’t want to say anybody in this field can find themselves in Phoenix in the Championship 4, but I think this is the year you can have an underdog make it,” Jeff Burton told Forbs.

Jeff Burton went on to say that the non-playoff drivers winning the playoff races will be an advantage to playoff drivers. He backed his argument by pointing out that when you are racing for points it’s good for drivers to have a separate winner as the opportunity would still be there for him to make it.

There are times that a non-playoff driver winning is an advantage to playoff drivers. You didn’t get a new winner and now, you’re racing for points. As weird as it sounds, if you can’t win, it’s in the playoff driver’s best interest to have a guy who’s already won win or to have someone else win because you didn’t lock someone into the next round and it creates an opportunity for you,” Jeff Burton added.

Jeff Burton went on to say that drivers navigating the playoffs will be an interesting dynamic to witness “It’s an interesting dynamic. It’ll be interesting to see how everybody navigates through these playoffs in regard to that,”.
