Most of NASCAR’s popularity resides with the drivers’ championship in the Cup Series. Due to this, many people overlook the simultaneously running owners’ championship. After the season, the championship is how the prize money will be split. Recently, NASCAR veteran Jeff Gordon called out the low popularity of the competition.
Gordon compared NASCAR to F1, saying that the open-wheel sport gets the same attention from the teams as their drivers. He believes that the teams should be recognized for their efforts in a greater way. Also, he noted that the money for the owners comes from the owner’s championship, making it all the more interesting.
“We are focused on the driver’s, it’s great, but what can we do more of to recognize the efforts of the teams and that championship that’s going on because that’s where the money comes from…In Formula 1, they have a constructor’s championship where it’s about the teams,” Gordon told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
Currently, the No.24 Hendrick Motorsports leads the owner’s championship by 28 points. HMS’ William Byron is leading his team, while JGR’s Denny Hamlin has taken them to second place. With five races remaining, the championship outcome could vastly change, with even non-Playoff contending drivers like Chase Elliott being in the race.

Chase Elliott opens up on racing for the Owners’ Championship
Chase Elliott failed to qualify for the Playoffs for the first time in his career in 2023. While the fan-favorite driver may be out of contention for the Driver’s Championship, he is still in the race to win the Owner’s Championship. Elliott recently revealed his thoughts on the same.
He was surprised that his and the team’s approach did not change. He said that once his contention for the owners started, he felt the same as he has always done in his career. Elliott claimed that the race for the Owner’s Championship keeps him motivated and wanting to do a good job.
“My approach, and the team approach has not been any different, and it’s kind of surprised me in a way because there isn’t a lot of talk about the owners compared to the drivers… It’s kept me motivated and we want to do a good job. So, nothing feels different, which is kind of odd,” said Elliott.
