“Excuse me,” Jimmie Johnson calls out prominent NASCAR journalist for reporting LEGACY MOTOR CLUB’s name incorrectly
Jimmie Johnson will mark his return to Cup series as driver with his appearance in the 2023 Daytona 500 in the No:84 LEGACY M.C. Chevy.

Jimmie Johnson
Petty GMS racing was rebranded as LEGACY MOTOR CLUB to incorporate their new co-owner Jimmie Johnson into their identity. The name represents the legacy of the Petty GMS, its co-owners Johnson, and Richard Petty is also a nod to the pioneer racing teams of the premier car racing. The rebranding announcement was made on January 12th.
Bob Pockrass, one of the most experienced and respected NASCAR journalists, shared his report on the announcement of the name vis his official Twitter handle with a caption that and a small mistake. He wrote, “Legacy Motor Club is the new name for Petty GMS. Does it matter that Petty isn’t in the team’s name?”
Jimmie Johnson, who came across the tweet, reminded Pockrass that he had incorrectly written the team’s name. The 7 times Cup champion pointed out that the whole name should be in capital letters, unlike how it was written. He replied, “Excuse me, Mr. @bobpockras, it’s LEGACY MOTOR CLUB or LEGACY M.C.”
Keeping Jimmie Johnson’s sassy response aside, one thing that still bothers NASCAR fans is the question asked by Pockrass, the new name doesn’t have the iconic Petty surname. It has been one of the most recognizable names in the NASCAR garage for more than half a century and is now part of history.
What Richard Petty and Jimmie Johnson had to say about the name change?

In a statement released, Johnson pointed out that the name change represents the present and past of the team’s legacy. He said, “After brainstorming about the new name of our team, (co-owner Maury Gallagher) and I recognized the opportunity to do something special and different. We felt it was important to have a name (Legacy) that honored the past and acknowledged the future. The term ‘Motor Club’ is a nod to car clubs of the past,”.
For Richard Petty, it’s championship accomplishments of him, Johnson, and ex-deriver Dale Inman. He said, “As we were all talking about creating a new name for the team, we looked at Jimmie, myself, and Dale Inman – that’s 22 championships – so there couldn’t be a better name to fit our race team than Legacy. The “Motor Club” is a perfect fit because we want our fans to pull for the whole team,”.
The No:43 and No:42 on the car are enough for petty for fans to remember the history of the team. He said, “When I see the No. 42 & 43 cars, no matter who the driver was, is currently, or could be in the future, I want our fans to remember the Petty history that comes with them, and that history will continue to be made with LEGACY M.C,”.
