Seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson has confirmed that he will drive the No:84 Toyota Camry in the 2024 Cup season for Legacy Motor Club.  After revealing John Hunter Nemechek as the new driver for the LMC No:42 team, the NASCAR legend said that he will continue to race for the team in selected events in 2024 in their third entry.

Jimmie Johnson joined LMC ahead of the 2022 Cup finale. He became a co-owner of former Petty GMS Racing alongside majority owners Maurie Gallagher and Richard Petty. The team was rebranded ahead of the start of the year and had an underwhelming year. While Erick Jones continued to produce impressive runs, rookie Noah Gragson under-achieved. The team later parted ways with Gragson over a social media controversy.

Johnson, while talking about the latest development of the team in NASCAR Race Hub, confirmed his return to racing. He also added that he will not race again in the 2023 season. The team will be fielding only two cars for the last nine races of the year as well, with Jones driving the No:43 and part-time drivers in the No:42.

On NASCAR Race Hub, Jimmie Johnson says he won’t race again this year but will get back in the No. 84 Cup car next year for select races and that he hopes they can announce a schedule soon,” Fox Sports Bob Pockrass posted on X (Previously known as Twitter).

Pockrass also confirmed that the Chevy legend making his Toyota debut was already determined when they signed the contract in May 2023. He posted, “That has been the plan since Legacy announced in May the change for 2024 that Jimmie Johnson would drive a Toyota in Cup races next season.”

Johnson spent two years chasing his IndyCar dream before returning to NASCAR as an owner-driver. He drove in the Daytona 500 on his LMC debut but couldn’t secure a solid finish. He made his second start in the Coca-Cola 600 and faced a similar fate.

The inaugural Chicago Street Race was the event he had been waiting for the most for a while, making his return as he was determined to race on NASCAR street course debut. But all the plan went south following a family tragedy, and he was forced to back out.

His in-laws were involved in a murder-suicide, and he scraped all his plans to race again in 2023. Johnson’s wife Chandra’s mother reportedly killed her husband and 11-year-old grandson before killing herself.
