Born to a 3 time NASCAR Champion, Lee Petty, going fast was second nature to Richard. Upon completing his graduation, he started working for his father’s racing company, Petty Enterprises. The King waited till he was 21 to finally get behind the wheel of one of his father’s race cars.

Petty won the Rookie of the Year award in 1959 and competed alongside his father in the inaugural Daytona 500, which Lee won. Petty won his first race in Lakewood, Georgia in 1959. Richard saw unfathomable amounts of success in his nearly 40-year-long career. Following his retirement in 1992, Petty took over management of Petty Enterprises and remained a majority shareholder till 2021.

Since his retirement, Petty has appeared in several Hollywood movies such as Days of Thunder, Petty Blue, Speedway, etc. Although his most famous cameo came in the Pixar movie Cars, where he lent his voice to Strip Weathers, a character loosely based on Petty and modeled after his famous 43 Road Runner Superbird.
