Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano has finally found his way back to the top at Richmond. He finished the Toyota Owners 400 at P2, behind winner Denny Hamlin after a chaotic overtime restart. The Team Penske driver took advantage of the battle between the No:11 and No:12 cars on the final laps to secure his first top-5 finish of the season.
Joey Logano was both happy disappointed with the result on Sunday. He was happy that finally the team has raced the whole event in the front raw, something they have been missing since the playoffs of 2023 season. But it stings for him to lose the race despite having fast car due to mistake in execution on the track.
We haven’t had a run like that in a while, but it also stings to be that close and not capitalize on the win. I guess I have mixed emotions. We had a really good car, a car that was capable of winning if we were in the front, but we didn’t execute everywhere else good enough to get there.Joey Logano said via NBC.
This was the best opportunity for Logano to make a comeback and top it off with a win. While he couldn’t achieve the second goal, the comeback they made in one race would be enough to set a positive trend for the reminder of the season. He needs to work on execution to avoid a repeat of this Sunday in the coming races.
Joey Logano revealed where he made the mistake that potentially cost him a win
Before giving the “it stings verdict”, Logano discussed how not so good restart cost him the win. He pointed out that he spun his tired in during his effort to make Denny Hamlin work our Martin Truex Jr. and it was costly. Once the No:11 Camry got away, he didn’t have enough time to close the gap.
I had a chance. I didn’t get a good enough restart. I really wanted to pressure them down into (Turn) 1 and force them to work up Truex, but I spun my tires there just trying to stay with them and that ultimately cost me to be close enough to do something. I don’t know. It feels good to be towards the front again.Joey Logano said.
Logano has nothing to panic or concerned about now as he said coming into the weekend. The team seems to have found the missing piece to get back to competitive level and unless this performance was purely on luck, Logano won’t have to wait long to secure the all-important win.
