Joey Logano, the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series champion, has had his ups and downs in superspeedway racing, from his memorable 2015 Daytona 500 win to the multi-car crashes. Now, it’s been three years since the Penske driver finished on the lead lap of the Daytona 500. The last time was in 2019, when he led 11 laps and finished fourth.
Logano’s hopes are not lost as he will be starting third at the Daytona International Speedway, thanks to his successful qualifying result. The 32-year-old won the 2023 Blue Green Vacations duel. He had already won the 150 miles event twice before, in 2019 & 2020. With this result, the No.22 Penske driver has positioned himself well for the title defense. During his media day conversation, he slammed one of the notorious opinions that Superspeedway racing like the Daytona 500 has more to do with Luck than skill.
Logano stated, “It’s all about how much effort you’re willing to put into something. I don’t think anybody at Penske looks at speedway racing as a luck thing. Sometimes you just have a bad placement. But the majority of it is if you can control some things or you can keep yourself towards the front. If you get wrecked in the front, you get wrecked in the front. Like, what are you going to do? But I think you can still put yourself up there with doing things correctly.”

Joey Logano is keen on learning as NASCAR keeps evolving

The 32-year-old Penske driver revealed that he relies on group effort and admits to learning from his teammates.“Now everybody has their own style. Like Ryan Blaney’s style out there is significantly different from mine and what I’m willing to do compared to what he’s willing to do. We drive our cars two completely different ways in the draft”. He further praised Blaney for doing a great job finishing up front and winning, he feels there are more than one ways to do this, and Blaney found a way that works for him.
Logano is conscious that this sport keeps evolving quickly, he feels it is not as simple as it used to be. He stated that the draft is never the same despite the rules. For example, NASCAR has now begun to utilize the “choose rule” on restarts for road courses and superspeedways. The rule basically allows the drivers to choose their lane at the restart.
The Penske driver thinks this could change the team’s choices in the race. Most drivers’ decisions are based on the moment, especially in superspeedway races, where the choice is between winning or wrecking. During the race, there is not a lot of time to think. According to the recent duel winner, it can be tricky and hard.
