Trackhouse Racing driver Ross Chastain had a late crash after the penultimate restart, which took him out of the race, and Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson out of contention for the win. The pair were fighting for the lead at Darlington Raceway on Sunday. Chastain was also involved in another incident with pole-sitter Martin Truex Jr. towards the end of stage 2.

However, Chastain’s wreck with Larson benefitted HMS driver William Byron.  Byron took the lead and kept Kevin Harvick at bay. He went on to claim his third victory of the season. This chain of events started with Ross Chastain’s action. It was a weekend full of controversy for the No.1 Chevy driver. Trackhouse Racing co-owner Justin Marks said they would intervene to address the back-to-back incidents involving Chastain. Marks spoke to SiriusXM NASCAR Radio about his driver’s mishap.

Justin Marks was undoubtedly upset over what transpired in Goodyear 400. He claimed that Chastain had a good race until the wreck. Marks explained, “Great speed out of the car, great pit stops all day. Ross drove a great race. I mean, he made good decisions in the first and second Stages in not racing guys super hard. Just sort of managing that give and take, and then it all just kind of fell apart at the end.”

Ross Chastain has built enemies due to his on-track wrecks. Marks believes it is a wake-up call for him. He stated, “He’s got some things he’s got to clean up. I mean, I’ll just be totally honest with you. And today, we started a process of more aggressively handling that with our partners, with Ross, and with our team. Not because necessarily we’re mad at him, but because there is so much opportunity here.”

Justin Marks admitted that he would help Chastain tame his aggression. However, he also conveyed that Trackhouse Racing believes in Chastain’s talent. Marks believes Chastain could become a Cup Series champion someday. He was on his way to victory at Darlington, but he skidded into Larson and threw away their chances of a win.

Justin Marks’ comments were after Hendrick Motorsports team owner Rick Hendrick’s angry statements. In the post-race press conference, Hendrick said Chastain did not have to be “that aggressive.” He stated it would be difficult for the Trackhouse Racing driver to win a championship with many enemies. Ross Chastain now needs to prove to his team and others that he can give more room to the other drivers.
