Stewart Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick has given his opinion on a return of Chicago Street Race to the Cup schedule in 2023. The 2014 Cup champion believes it will be fitting for the city to make NASCAR return after taking a five years break. Harvick wants this to be applied not just to Chicago but to every race other than the Crown Jewel race.
One of the major criticisms of the 36-race NASCAR schedule is the lack of proper representation of some tracks. While some ways get two races a year, some don’t, and many tracks hosting underwhelming races for many seasons are yet to be replaced. Harvick has proposed a complete revamp of the Cup schedule to fix this issue with a lack of entertainment.
When asked about his opinion of the Cup schedule, Harvick pointed out that he would fix it by shuffling the races and ensuring that the last ten races of the season have a balanced number of short tracks and road courses. He also urged NASCAR to explore tracks in Mexico and Canada in the Chicago slot.
“Rotate the championship race, the playoff races, and create some sort of system that made sure there were enough road courses, short tracks, and everything in the last 10…I’d say, ‘I’ll see you guys again in about five years. You can be excited about it for the next four; then we’ll be back through the rotation,” Harvick said in Chicago pre-race press conference.

Kevin Harvick is looking forward to the Atlanta Cup race despite it being a superspeedway
The Atlanta Motor Speedway holds a special place in Harvick’s career. It is the race where he earned the respect of the NASCAR nation and proved he was not the perfect but a proper replacement for Dale Earnhardt. He replaced Dale Sr. after his tragic death in the 2001 Daytona 500 and scored his first-ever Cup win and one of RCR’s most iconic wins ever.
Since then, every time he steps foot at the track, it’s special, and he has been a fan of all the races hosted by the track. Atlanta is no more a track he secured his maiden win at as it was re-configured into a short-superspeedway. Despite his aversion towards superspeedway races, he loves racing in Atlanta because the configuration is a unique challenge. He looks forward to tackling the challenge in his last season in the Cup series.
“I understand the surface was at a point where it was a lot of work and needed some change. I’m not sure that everybody wants to run more superspeedway races, but I think it’s exciting and very unique with the mile-and-a-half configuration and things happening so fast. I think everybody’s hoping for a tremendous grip loss in a really short amount of time,” Harvick said in a press release.
