The 2023 NASCAR Cup Season witnessed the retirement of the last legacy driver in the garage Kevin Harvick. While the season was disappointing for the Stewart Haas Racing legend in terms of results on the track, emotionally he had one of the best retirement tours a racer could hope for. Solid advice from former champion Tony Stewart helped him to cherish the moments more.

Stewart advised Harvick to let his guard down in the final year of his career and let the fans tell his story. It wasn’t something Harvick had recently been doing, but in the end, it proved to be a great call. He feels fortunate about having the opportunity to be friends with his former rival turned boss Stewart.

For me, I was fortunate to have a boss in Tony Stewart. He had some great advice on things that he liked and didn’t like about his last year of driving. One of his biggest pieces of advice was, ‘Hey, let your guard down. Let the fans and the racetracks and the sport help you go back and tell the story and just enjoy it.’ I think for me that was not something I would typically do.

Harvick also highlighted the effort put in by the SHR to give him the best retirement possible with sponsors, paint schemes, and belts. The team also shared a lot of content on social media to celebrate all the moments he had on different tracks over the years. Harvick is happy and thankful to his former team for this.

Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewrat’s retirement plans have few similarities

Harvick’s plans for the future include a broadcasting gig with Fox Sports and part-time racing in the lower divisions. The 2014 Cup champion is technically taking over the role Stewart has been doing part-time as a guest race analyst from 2024.

He is also set to race in the lower NASCAR division, the Truck and Xfinity.  Harvick has also confirmed that he will be racing in late model races as well next season, once Fox’s race coverage of the first half of the season is over.

Another similarity they have is their racing series. Stewart has been leading the SRX Series with great success over the years while Harvick will be playing a leading role in running the CARS Tour, alongside Dale Earnhardt Jr.
