Stewart Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick is set to retire at the end of the 2023 Cup season. The 2014 Cup champion announced at the start of this year that it would be his last and, since then, has been savoring each race week. He will say goodbye to the No:4 Ford Mustang team at the Cup season finale at Phonix.
Harvick, being one of the most famous and most respected drivers on the grid, gave the upcoming Sunday’s race more than one damson. The fact that he might lose his farewell season winless is something the NASCAR nation won’t enjoy alongside his team. It’s not the 61 times Cup race winner’s fans who will miss seeing him racing. He is going to miss a lot of things about the sport as well.
In a recent interview, Tony Stewart’s driver was asked what will be the thing he will miss more. The champion driver candidly admitted that it’s the competitiveness. But the irony is that he wants to see an end to the same factor from his life and to embrace the sport of NASCAR with an entirely different perspective as a fan.
Discover:Rick Hendrick urges Kyle Larson and William Byron not to replicate Creed and Hill’s Martinsville clash at PhoenixI love the competition with people. I love being around my team and the guys and gals that put the cars on the racetrack. I love that piece of competing. But it's also the thing that I'm looking forward to the most — not having to worry about it. It just consumes the mindset that you have and everything that you do. In order to do it well, you have to think about it all.Kevin Harvick told Fox Sports.
Carl Edwards explained to Kevin Harvick the importance of ditching the competition mindset
In the same interview, when asked specifically what he would miss the least, he gave the same answer. He recalled a conversation he had with Carl Edwards and the changes the NASCAR legends experienced in his life post-retirement.
Edwards told Harvick that he would become more tuned in with life and his approach to kids and family would have a drastic change. He will have better and deeper conversations, and the racer can finally stop thinking about the race and sponsor.
Kevin, I can't tell you how much more in-tune you're going to be with your kids and your family and the conversations that you have when you don't have to think about everything else that you have going on with that car, and that team and those sponsors and those people.
Harvick quoted Edwards.
