Hendrick Motorsport and Kyle Larson had a night to remember at Martinsville on Sunday. The No:5 car ended its 38 years long wait to score a second win at the track. But it carries more significance than that. The 1984 Martinsville win was the first ever in HMS’s history, and Larson’s was the team’s 295th. They are now 5 race wins away from securing a milestone 500 win.

The win wasn’t special just for the team as it had a similar significance to the 2021 Cup champion. It’s Larson’s first win in the most challenging short track in the Cup schedule. He had never scored a finish better than P3 before last Sunday, and it always has been a place that desperately wanted to conquer.

I think it was more than a whisper at our season kickoff luncheon for Mr. Hendrick. It was an ask of his and he lit that fire underneath of everybody very early on in January. We’re certainly marching forward towards that.
Said Jeff Andrews, president and general manager of HMS.

The occasion called for a big celebration from the Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver, who delivered just that. After the win, he produced a crazy burnout that saw him nearly finish a whole lap while burning the rubber with a smock everywhere.  Some fans expected an Xfinity series burnout-type car fire, but it didn’t happen.

Larson, with the win, became only the second driver in the grid to score multiple wins this season. The other one is his teammate Willaim Byron who also has two wins. HMS’s Alex Bowman, though, is without a win and has shown incredible consistency and is expected to secure a win soon. The race also marked the return of Chase Elliott to the paddock after six weeks’ break due to a tibia injury. He finished P10 in the race.

Here is how fans reacted to Kyle Larson’s burnout celebration

Fans were pleased with the show Larson put on during the burnout as they quickly praised him for the impressive win.

There were also some fans who used the opportunity to troll the driver and claim that he was erasing the evidence of illegal car modification before the post-race inspection.

Jokes aside, Larson won the race fair and square and put him in a position to be more relevant and dominating for the rest of the season. It would be interesting to see If Kyle Larson would be able to pull of another championship season this year.
