LEGACY MOTOR CLUB will facilitate the return of seven times Cup champion Jimmie Johnson to the Cup series in 2023. The Ex-HMS driver returned to the grid as owner-driver of Petty GMS Racing which is now the LEGACY M.C. He is scheduled to race in five tracks this season, and his maiden outing will be at the official season opener with the No:84 Chevy Camaro ZL1 team.

The team has announced the crew chief line-up for Erik Jones and JJ in the 2023 season. Todd Gordon will manage the No:84 crew in Daytona, and the No:43 team has extended its contract with Dave Elenz. Luke Lambert is the crew chief of Nah Gregson’s No:42 team.

Todd Gordon won the 2018 Cup title with Joey Logano and has scored 25 race wins with him. He has 4 other Cup wins with separate drivers. He served as crew chief for Ryan Blaney in 2023 before the retirement announcement.

I’m thrilled to have Todd come on board as my crew chief. I’ve enjoyed getting to know him over the last few weeks. I have known and respected him as a competitor for many years and have always appreciated his professionalism, work ethic, and results. His wisdom and experience will be beneficial to LEGACY M.C. as a whole. I believe he will work very well with Dave, Luke (Lambert, No. 42 crew chief), and the entire team,” Jimmie Johnson said, welcoming Gordan.

Todd Gordon seized the opportunity to manage the No:84 team as it allowed him to enjoy the competition he missed after retirement without embracing the full-time role. He wants to build the success LEGACY M.C. was able to achieve in 2023.

I’m really looking forward to working with another champion that still has the desire to compete and win at the highest level. In my conversations with Jimmie, I found we both miss the competition – but don’t want the grind of a full-time schedule – so this is a great opportunity for us to still race and help LEGACY MOTOR CLUB build on the success they saw in 2022,” Todd Gordon said on a press release.

Though Todd is yet to start working with Johnson, he is hopeful that he will be able to produce a solid qualifying and final race ruin with the champion driver at Daytona. His belief comes from LEGACY M.C.’s strong team and their strong out last season at superspeedways.

Having the pressure of ‘making the race’ through qualifying and the Duel races is going to be a little stressful with a car that Jimmie and I haven’t worked with yet. But the team had really good cars on superspeedways last season, so we have great resources, great teammates, and a good starting point,” Todd Gordan added.
