Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. has admitted that he is in a poor spot going into the last race of the 2023 post-season Round of 16. He came into the first playoff round as the championship favorite following his regular-season title win. But two back-to-back poor finishes over tire blowouts saw him now sitting at P13, seven points off the cut-off.
He needs to reduce one of the best performances of his career this week at the Bristol Saturday night race to secure his place in the Round of 12 and keep his chase on for a second Cup title. He will start the race on P5 after solid qualifying behind fellow bubble contender Michael McDowell. His Toyota teammate Bubba Wallace, who has a 19-point deficit starting at P9, is another major challenger for him in the race.
While talking about what’s ahead of him in the race before the qualifying, he admitted that he is in a poor spot going into the event. He said that the flat tires at Darlington and Kansas were pure bad luck. The No:19 Toyota Camry driver pointed out that it was bad luck that should be blamed for his woes and admitted he was in a bad spot.
“It’s obviously a terrible spot to be in. Last week, we didn’t even get a chance to race, which was disappointing. Coming off a tough Darlington race, and then, you know, two laps in [at Kansas] you feel like you’re in trouble and a flat tire. Turns out you ran something over. It’s just terrible bad luck. We’ll do the best we can. But obviously, it’s a bad spot to be in,” Truex said on Friday, as reported by ESPN.

Martin Truex Jr. understands it’s a big race for him

The coming race at Bristol is a big challenge for the former champion as it is one of the tracks he has never won in his career. Despite making nearly 30 starts at the track, he has scored just four top-10 finishes. He has the task of re-writing history there at the track.
He understands the significance of the coming night, considering his past struggles and the uncertain nature of track where a driver can be caught In someone else’s mess often. He hopes to produce the best he and his team can on Saturday.
“I know tomorrow night’s a big race, this place hasn’t been our best place by any means, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. It’s going to be what it’s going to be, and we’ve just got to go do our best,” Truex said.
