Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. has admitted that he isn’t a good decision-maker while discussing his retirement plans after his maiden New Hampshire Motor Speedway win. The No:19 driver decided to extend his stay at TRD for one more year midway through the 2022 season but is yet to make a decision on his plans for 2024.
After 20 races to the 2023 season, the 2017 Cup champion won three. He was winless in 2022 and missed the playoffs for the first time since joining JGR. But all that is stories of the past as with the help of his new crew chief James Small, he has once again become the dominant force the NASCAR nation became fabs off.
While talking about his plans, Truex admitted that he is bad at making big decisions and said that he would be delighted to walk out of the sport as the champion. Though he is unsure what to do, he has one thing already decided, which is the No:19 team should always have the best driver. He added that he wanted to make sure he would be the guy if he came back.
“I’m bad at making big decisions…It’d be pretty awesome to win the championship and walk off into the sunset, but I don’t know. My team is amazing, they deserve the very best driver, the guy that wants it more than anyone else and I’ve been that guy and I want to make sure that if I come back, I’m willing to do that. It takes a lot. It’s not just show up at the track, drive the car, go home,” Truex Jr. told the media on Monday.

Martin Truex Jr. opens up about his Cup commitment
The one thing that has been bugging the champion driver is the question of whether he is still capable of making the necessary sacrifices to remain in NASCAR. He added that being consistent on the track and winning races will not be the sole determinants of his decision. It will be tough for the veteran to once again make the same sacrifices he has been making over the last 25 years.
“Takes a lot of commitment. It’s a lot of travel, a lot of missing things with family and friends, and all of those things I’ve done for 25 years. Do I want to keep doing it, and am I willing to sacrifice all of those things again for my team? That’s just what I’m thinking about. I don’t know that running good and winning makes a difference,” Martin Truex Jr. said.
He promised fans that a decision would be made soon and he would inform the NASCAR nation about it. Bust still Truex Jr. wishes he had more time to decide when to retire from one thing he dedicated his whole life to. He said, “I wish I had more time to figure out what I want to do next year, but I don’t. So, I’ll know soon, and you’ll know soon.”
