Joe Gibbs Racing is in a dilemma in the 2023 season over the uncertainty of veteran Martin Truex Jr.’s future. The 2017 Cup champion postponed his retirement plans last season and inked a new contract to drive the No:19 Camry this season. The TRD team management is now in talks with Truex Jr. over another possible contract extension.
The last weekend’s Dover Cup race winner, before the start of the current season, had pointed out that he would take a decision on his stay once it’s got to the mid-season. The Cup garage is not expecting to see the driver remaining in the series beyond 2024, at least for full-time. The greatest late bloomer of NASCAR might sign one and final connect extension with JGR if they are consistent on track this year.
While talking to SiriusXM NASCAR Radio after his Dover home track win, he said he would love to see his brother Ryan Truex talking over his Cup car after his retirement. He says, “It would be so awesome if one day when I retire, I could get him in this car of mine. But for now, we need to get some sponsors, and we need to get him in that 19 Xfinity car more often, and get him full-time and get him a championship there,”.

Martin Truex Jr. has a plan for Ryan Truex to progress in the NASCAR pyramid

Ryan Truex scored the maiden NASCAR win of his 12-year-long career last Saturday at Dover. Truex never had the luxury of racing the top cars in his career till 2023, when he got a part-time shot with JGR. He made it count with back-to-back impressive runs, and now the win.
The next step for the brothers is to find a permanent seat, if possible, with a championship-caliber team like JGR. They need to find solid sponsors who could support those ventures. Truex Jr. wants all these packages ready for 2024.
“We got to take it one step at a time. We need to get him full-time in Xfinity. With the right team and the right guys he’s got now that he’s working with, he’s a championship contender from day one.,” Truex Jr. said.
We just need to find a way to get that deal put together for next year. Everybody’s working hard on it. Obviously, that win’s got to do a lot. I hope it does enough because I’m his biggest fan, and I know he can get it done,” Truex Jr. added.
