2023 NASCAR Indy road course race winner Michael McDowell had a unique take on demand for the return of the IMS oval to the Cup schedule replacing the RC circuit. He doesn’t seem fully sold on the need for the return of Brickyard 400 and wishes to see both types of races co-editing in the Cup schedule.
McDowell said that idea of having the Brickyard 400 return to the Cup schedule is lame. He, though, went on to accept that his opinion is b it biased and that racing on road courses is what he does best with Front Raw Motor Sports’ No:34 Ford Mustang. His bold opinion came a day after his dominant win last Sunday.
“Lame. There’s the answer.” McDowell said that when asked about the Oval vs. Road Course debate, He also expressed his bias towards RC races, saying, “You know me, I’m biased. I want to run on as many road courses as we can.”
The veteran drivers’ opinion differs vastly from that of Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. Both of them have been vocal about the return of the event. Busch even said that NASCAR should ditch IMS from the schedule if they are not racing in the Oval.

Michael McDowell says the Next-Gen car will be better at the Indy Oval
One major reason for the Indy Oval getting dropped from the Cup schedule was the lack of e entertaining racing. This caused a sharp decline in fan attendance at the prestigious track for the NASCAR event.
The car performance will remain a major concern if NASCAR decides to return. But McDowell believes the seventh-gen cars will be better than their predecessors. He also added that it would be better for both oval and road course races to coexist.
“But I do understand the prestigiousness of running the Brickyard and being on the oval. And I do think that this Next-Gen car is going to put on a good race. It’s going to put on a better race than our previous generation car here,” McDowell said.
“I understand wanting to go back to the oval. All I’m asking is can we do both? Can we run the oval and the road course? Is that a possibility? But yeah, we’ll see what happens. They don’t ask me, just so you know,” McDowell added.
