‘Ran out of steam there,’ Chris Buescher on what cost him a win as he failed to ‘get it done when it counted’ at Sonoma Raceway

NASCAR marked history in Sonoma Raceway last weekend as Daniel Suarez became the first Mexican-born driver to secure a cup race win in the premier stock car racing championship as he held off Chris Buescher topping the cart in his No:99 Trackhouse Racing Chevy Camaro. Though the 1.99 miles road course race was among one of the quietest ones of this season so far it had an amazing finish that is worthy of NASCAR record books.

The No:17 Ford Mustang driver for RFK Racing, Chris Buescher was all set for a second career cup win in Sonoma following his return to the Ford after he was side-lined the previous week at Gateway after he had Covid-19, as he was replaced by Zane Smith. Though the 2015  Xfinity Series Champion was able to take back the lead last stage he wasn’t able to hold on to it as the No:99 car proved to be too good for him.

The No:17 driver leads the dominant run of the Ford Mustang on the track as they secured all but one place in the Top 6, with the RFC man leading the pack. Now Chris Buescher has come forth expressing his thoughts and opinions on what went wrong for him at Sonoma and how he lost to Daniel Suarez.

Chris Buescher acknowledged that his team did a great job and put in a really fast mustang for him at Sonoma as he was delighted by the way he got to get back to the track. He went on to say he failed to get the job done by securing the win in the end, as he should have. He added that he was close to getting the win in the end but should have made it happen in the final restart itself to go for the win.

This team did a great job and put a really fast Mustang underneath me this weekend. What a way to return and come back to the race track, but I didn’t get the job done there in the end. I feel like we should have had the win and I didn’t get it. We were close, just needed more. I needed to make it happen on that (last) restart and I didn’t,” Chris Buescher said.

He went on to say that though they had a lot of speed he struggled a bit on long-run speed as the tires were wearing out fast. He went on to say that it was an awesome recovery compared to his early-season COTA outing but filed to get it done when it counted the most. Chris Buescher went on to congratulate Daniel Suarez for the win though I hurt to come out on the wrong side as he explained he ran out of steam trying to catch the Mexican.

We had a lot of speed. Just struggled for a little bit of long-run speed, wearing rear (tires) out. Just didn’t get it done when it counted. It’s an awesome run. Awesome recovery from COTA, what we had there. Everybody back at RFK (Racing) is doing a great job. Hurts to be that close, but congratulations to Suarez. We were trying, trying to get him…Ran out of steam there,” Chris Buescher added.

He went on to say that though he is disappointed about the close call he is happy about the fact that he can get a win in the future if the cars are like this. “If we can keep getting cars like this then a win will come. It was an awesome run, and I should be happy, but I am disappointed to be that close and not get it,” says Chris Buescher.
