The Cook Out 400 at Martinsville on Sunday marked an historic night for Hendrick Motorsports. They secured a 1-2-3 finish on the weekend that marked their 40th anniversary of first Cup race win in 1984, that saved them from bankruptcy and paved the way towards their charge to become the most dominant force ever in the sport.
William Byron survived the final re-start to secure the win defeating his teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott in the process. For team owner Rick Hendrick who was at his home, due to medical issues, the final laps of the race were pressure building. He feared the worst could’ve happened to his three drivers fighting for the win.
While talking to the media about the win on Monday, he pointed out that’s seeing Elliott racing Byron hard made tensed. He was shouting at the TV fearing if things could go overboard and the duo will crash out taking Larson with them. Fortunately, nothing bad happened as they trio raced each other clean and fair, like they should.
I think was yelling a little bit like, ‘Oh, no, no, no’ You got to let them race but, man, all I could see was them wrecking and maybe taking Larson with them and then, well, I couldn’t go over there today, but I’d be trying to settle everybody back down. I’m glad they played nice and raced each other clean.Rick Hendrick said via RACER.
Rick Hendrick detailed how they celebrated the win in his home
Another thing that made the race win special for the NASCAR legend is the fact that he celebrated it with his family. His wife Linda, daughter Lynn, son-in-law Marshal Carlson and his grandchildren Henry and Kate were at their home to celebrate.
We had a fun time. My daughter brought balloons, and I’m not sure that was a good idea to celebrate before the race was over but we a nice group and a fun time.Rick Hendrick said.
The milestone win was another reward to the investment of time and money Rick Hendrick has made it in the sport and the current form of the team asserts that many more such milestones is ready to come. The team would be hoping that 2024 will be the year they can finally win the championship in the Next-Gen era.
