Having competed in professional motor racing for many years, Roger Penske is an American businessman and entrepreneur. He is best known for owning the Penske Corporation, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar, Team Penske, DJR Team Penske, and other auto-related enterprises. Penske is a corporate director at General Electric in addition to his other activities, and he has previously held positions on the boards of The Home Depot and Delphi Automotive. The American Motorsports Hall of Fame and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame have inducted him. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in October 2019.
Sports Illustrated selected him for the 1961 Sports Car Club of America Driver of the Year. A few years after he stopped competing as a driver, he founded one of the most successful teams in the NASCAR and IndyCar series. Since 1958, the captain has been racing and winning in the United States, winning every series he has competed in. Penske began his racing career in hillclimbing before moving on to road course racing with Porsches. Penske made his debut in professional racing at the now-defunct Marlboro Motor Raceway in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He was a well-known race car driver by 1960. Penske participated in two Formula One Grands Prix and won the Riverside, California, NASCAR Pacific Coast Late Model race in 1963.
He was granted a rookie test at Indianapolis with the Dean Van Lines team but declined it for professional reasons. As a result, he never ran the Indianapolis 500. Penske substituted Mario Andretti to take that test in their place of him. Penske competed in racing until 1965, when he decided to give up his driving career to focus on opening his first Chevrolet dealership in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
