On Sunday, Ryan Newman competed in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway. This was his first Cup appearance since the 2021 finale. The 45-year-old already has an incredible career in NASCAR and is widely known as “Rocket Man.” He holds 18 race wins, 268 top-ten finishes, and 51 poles.

In the 2023 season, Newman competes part-time in the NASCAR Cup Series with Rick Ware Racing, driving the No.51 Ford Mustang. He replaced Cody Ware for the Goodyear 400 as NASCAR suspended him after being arrested for assault. “Rocket Man” finished 28th in the race on Sunday and was unhappy. He blamed himself and stated it was a talent-related issue.

Ryan Newman spoke about his race in Darlington. He stated, “It was a decent run for us, I feel. For me, I ran out of talent. I’ve seen other guys run out of talent several times in one race. So, I feel like it was decent.” The Rocket Man was quite hard on himself and called it a “decent run.” Though Newman was away from the Cup Series for a long time, he qualified 26th, and it looked like he was comfortable with the Next Gen car.

Ryan Newman fell a lap behind early during the race and could not recover his track position. His day got worse as there were comments from him suffering from rib pain. It was due to a badly fitted seat. Newman said, “My seat was not comfortable. I had rib pain after the end of the first stage, so I was miserable in the car. I’ve got a cramp in my foot. My ribs feel like somebody punched me. So, I’m just happy to be walking and moving right now.”

In the final stage of the race, Newman spun on his own. Despite all that, he did not allow it to ruin his mood. He is open to running more races and is already set for select events with Rick Ware Racing. After the race, Newman said he had fun out there. However, he believes the team deserved better, as the car had speed. Newman will have further discussions with RWR about the races.

Newman opened up about being back in the Cup Series competition. He confessed it was fine and said there were no cautions to help him regain the lead lap, and called AJ Allmendinger a lucky dog as he benefitted from the first caution. However, Newman concluded by saying he was not comfortable in the car and that they would work on it.
