Cup redemption remains a dream for Stewart Haas Racing’s Ryan Preece as his nightmare 2023 season continues at Pocono. He was spun out of the race for the consecutive time. He replaced Coe Custer in the No:31 car at the start of this season. He got the seat following a year-long hard work to get a seat and sponsors after he failed to capitalize on his first Cup shot.
It was Michael McDowell who took out Preece last weekend. The duo had a confrontation after the race, but both parties kept their cool, and the Frontrow Motorsports driver later apologized. But it was an entirely different scenario in Pocono Highpoint.com 400, where Spire Motorsports’ Corey LaJoie supposedly spun him out.
Preece, running in the midfield throughout the race, secured just a P31 finish after the spin. It severely affects his desire to secure at least a P25 or better finish in the championship this season and try to extend his stay with SHR in the Cup for at least one more season. The lack of Tony Stewart’s team fielded Fords’ pace is hurting him as well.
He wasted no time confronting Corey LaJoie, whom he believed spun him after the race. He sprinted to the driver’s car before the Chevy driver got his window net down and started venting at him. “You f*ck, you piece of sh*t. That was a shit move, and you f*cking knew…” He was interested and pulled away from the scene soon after.

How the 2023 season so far has played out for Ryan Preece
Fans were happy to see the veteran return to the Cup series after one year away from the sport following a three years stint with JTG Daugherty Racing that didn’t produce desired results. He finally had the opportunity to drive a Ca from a top team, but he is now on his way to another poor finish in the championship table.
He is the only driver not to secure a top-10 finish in SHR this season. His best finish of the 2023 season has been the P12 at Phoenix. He was able to secure the pole on Martinsville Speedway and lead more than 100 laps in the race but failed to convert it to good results. He is present with stands P25 in the championships due to his 11 finishes outside the top 20 from 21 race starts.
He is the driver with the least odds of making the playoffs from the SHR garage this season. Besides his Cup championship-winning teammate Kevin Harvick, no driver can make it to the last 16 without a win. With his teammates, Aric Almirola and Chase Briscoe being on better form than his shot at winning the race is limited. Still, it is not impossible, considering the Cup field will tackle Daytona before the Chase starts.
