Trackhouse Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen claims reigning Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki ‘wants to go to NASCAR’

The 2024 NASCAR season will feature two Supercars champions battling on the track. Three-time champion Shane van Gisbergen is set to join Trackhouse Racing as part of a development contract while the 2023 Champion Brodie Kostecki is set to race part-time in the Cup series with Richard Childress Racing.

The NASCAR-Supercars partnership blossomed in 2023 after SVG was signed to drive the Project 91 Chevy at the inaugural Chicago Street Race. The veteran Kiwi racer used his superior Street Course experience to full use and won the event, becoming the first driver to win the NASCAR race on debut over five decades.

This was enough to convince Trackhouse to give him a contract. He raced in two more events this season in the Cup and Oval debut in the Truck Series. He went head-to-head with fellow Supercars driver Kostecki in the Indy Cup race. The latter drove for RCR’s third entry and is set to start four to five races In 2024.  According to SVG Kostecki wishes to make his NASCAR stint full-time.

I think he wants to go [to NASCAR]. I think he wants to do a few more years here, maybe, but he’s definitely good enough to be there. You could see glimpses of his brilliance at Indy, and he has experience on ovals. I’m pretty sure he’s doing a few [NASCAR] races next year and I’ll be hoping he goes well.

Shane van Gisbergen is full Parise for Brodie Kostecki

In the same interview, SVG went on to explain the skills and prowess of the racer he lost the 2023 Supercars championship to following an early crash in the season finale. He pointed out that Kostecki is the technical driver who understands what he needs.

He went on to highlight the simulator work the Australian has been doing. The sim was Kostecki’s path to NASCAR, as he was RCR’s Road Course racing consultant. SVG pointed out that his ex-rival is very smart and a good driver with a good work ethic.

Seeing how good he is and how technical he is as a driver and the way he understands what we need… when we race on the simulator, he’s doing all the sim set-ups and stuff. He’s very smart with what a car needs and obviously he’s a good driver as well, he works hard at it and the team’s been good this year.
