Three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen is set to make his permanent NASCAR move next season with a development contract with Justin Marks’ Trackhouse Racing. He secured a seat in the premier stock car racing championship after winning the inaugural Chicago Street Race on his NASCAR debut.
Ahead of his move to the United States, the three-time Supercars champion has detailed the changes he wants to see happening in the Supercars series for it to remain relevant. One of his primary as was the series to be rebranded to its original name, the V8 Supercars. Right now it is the Repco Supercars Championship.
The first thing I would do is rebrand it [the sport] back to V8 Supercars.Gisbergen said via Gypsy Tales Podcast.
One of the primary reasons alongside the big NASCAR opportunity, Gisbergen has decided to quit Supercars where he has secured 81 wins is his dislike of the direction the sport is going. He has been a big critic of the new generation of cars and how the limited development opportunities teams have are negatively affecting racing. It’s something Supercars has to address.
Shane van Gisbergen details four more points that need attention
The Kiwi racer went on to detail four more changes that he would like to see happening in Supercars to make it better. He wants to see the wind tunnel testing parity continued and wants to see more money spent on the tires, as they are the most important part of racing, to produce new compounds.
Then, I would do the wind tunnel testing for parity, which they are doing…I would then also put a different type of Dunlop tire on cars. You need to spend more money on tires, they are the most important part of racing.
The other two changes he wants to see happening are the elimination of fuel drop and a change in the amount of fuel allowed in the car at the start. He believes with these changes racing can be made more sustainable.
Then, I would probably [look to potentially] get rid of all the fuel drop stuff…If you could change the start level or how much you had to put in, you would bring in fuel saving, trying to have different levels of pitstops, or amount of how many pitstops; I think that would make the racing much better.
