James Small is finding it hard to settle in as the crew chief of Joe Gibbs Racing’s No:19 team. He hasn’t yet found the balance in the 2017 Martin Truex Jr. garage, and the situation got worse as his winless streak continued till Dover. Truex Jr. Dover’s win has brought positive momentum to the No:19, and now it’s the up to Small to keep it going.
The driver and crew chief had heated arguments following the 2023 Richmond Cup race. Poor execution on and off track that day cost, the bare minimum, a podium finish. Truex Jr. count conserve his tires enough, and Small failed to give the right instructions as well. The explosive radio conversation left a bad impression about their relationship in the garage.
The fans of No:19 and the 2017 champion quickly demanded James Small’s exit. They wanted Truex Jr.’s former crew chief Cole Pearn back. The win at Dover might have changed some minds over his position. He has secured the playoff spot as of now. The No:19 missed out on the Top 16 last year after going winless the whole season and finished P17 in the table.
During his post-race press conference at Dover, he was asked by a reporter whether he had any special messages about the JGR team’s fans. He has the answer ready. He asked them to quit sending messages to him on Twitter demanding replacement. He said, “They can stop sending me s***** messages on Twitter asking for Cole (Pearn) to come back. Anyway, we’re good,”.

Martin Truex Jr. and James Small had heated exchanges in Dover as well
The win at Dover Motor Speedway was no smooth ride for the No:19 team. The duo got into a heated exchange in the first half of the race that saw them chasing the leaders to get upfront. Small later apologized for his remarks during the conversation.
But later into to the race, Small showcased his ability with the two-tire pit stop call. It allowed him to keep the lead for the final restart. It was a courageous call that was worth taking. He could withstand the surge of Ryan Blaney on the two-tire strategy and Ross Chastain with four new tires in the final laps to enter victory lane.
