Supercars icon Shane van Gisbergen will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut on July 2nd. It is the first NASCAR event on Chicago streets this season, and the three-time Australian Supercars champion will pilot the No.91 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing. Though his Cup Series dream is about to get fulfilled, van Gisbergen also wants to experience racing on the oval track.
Van Gisbergen left for the United States last week t prepare for his upcoming NASCAR debut. He spent time with the team in Nashville and watched his teammate Ross Chastain win the Ally 400. He was delighted with the experience and wants to try racing in the oval. The 34-year-old confessed this during a press conference ahead of the race. He further revealed that he expressed his desire to Justin Marks, Trackhouse Racing’s boss.
Shane van Gisbergen stated, “I’ve never really thought about ovals too much but you’d love to have a go. Like, watching yesterday how committed the guys were in qualifying… and they had the practice and then you sit around all day and you get one lap. So to see how committed everyone was, and see who was braver than the others into turn 1, it was pretty cool to watch.”

Tomorrow he will test the Trackhouse Chevy at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. After that, van Gisbergen will return to the simulator and hit the Chicago streets next weekend.
The 34-year-old hopes that the weather conditions will be favorable tomorrow. Shane Van Gisbergen said the test ensures he feels comfortable in the car. He also wants to see if everything is working fine. The Supercars champion is preparing himself for his big debut and wants to learn the team’s dynamics with the engineer and crew chief.
