The 2022 season was one of the most disappointing seasons for Stewart Hass Racing driver Cole Custer. The 2020 cup Rookie of the year finished the season 25th in the championship standing, just one place above his 2021 finish. He is also the lowest-placed SHR driver on the grid.
Custer joined SHR in 2020 replacing current Trackhouse Racing veteran Daniel Suarez. His signing came after an impressive 2019 Xfinity series run that saw him win 8 races. He finished P2 in the championship. He won his first cup race that year in Kentucky and finished P16 In the standing. It has been downhill for the youngster ever since. He finished outside the top 10 in all but 5 races he ran in the last two years.
The Stewart Hass Racing was expected to give Custer one last chance to prove himself. But the latest reports suggest that they have other plans in mind. Teams’ co-owner and NASCAR legend Tony Stewart wants the youngster to be replaced by Ryan Preece, who is managed by a firm owned by SHR veteran Kevin Harvick.
Team owner Gene Haas wants Custer on the team but is not ready to fight Tony Stewart for him. “I’d like to see Cole back in it for another year at least. But Tony has some other ideas. It’s pretty hard to argue with Tony because he’s picked so many good drivers over the years,” Hass said in October.
Even if Tony Stewart removes him from the cup line up Cole Custer will have a ride with SHR
Cole Custer’s father is a senior executive at SHR and will surlily stand up for his son’s future. He can argue for his son’s seat with the fact that the whole SHR team hasn’t been great though out. Aric Almirola, one of the senior riders, average finish this season was just 3 positions above that of Custer.
Cole Custer can return to the Xfinity Series with teams that have allegiance with SHR. Rick Ware Racing No. 15 is an option they can explore. He might also represent Live Fast Motorsports or SHR’s Xfinity series side next year. Custer might stay with SHR if Preece fails to bring in enough sponsors for the deal.
