Toyota Racing Development president David Wilson has said he is confident that Joe Gibbs Racing rookie Ty Gibbs can secure a playoff spot in the 2023 season by winning one of the five upcoming races. The 2022 Xfinity Series champion is currently the only driver in JGR to score a win, but it’s acceptable; after all, he is a rookie.

While talking about the rookie’s 2023 season so far, Wilson admitted that Gibbs had met the expectation the team set for him in 2023 and admitted they wouldn’t be disappointed if he didn’t win a race this year. Wilson claimed that securing a win in the regular season is still possible for Joe Gibbs’ grandson, as there are two road course races where he can shine left in the schedule.

It’s certainly met our expectation, and, heck, it would not surprise me if he doesn’t have a win in him before we’re done this season. He’s obviously got some work to do to claw his way into the final couple of playoff spots. (It’s) certainly achievable in five races. He’s a heck of a road racer (and) we’ve got some good tracks ahead of us,” David Wilson is quoted bt RACER.

Ty Gibbs secured his career-best Cup finish of P5 last weekend at Pocono and is motivated to finish higher in the coming races. The youngster is getting one of the most competitive cars from JGR, as the team has secured six combined wins this season. Martin Truex Jr. has secured three wins, while Denny Hamlin has won twice. Christopher Bell has scored one victory this year.

One major criticism of Gibbs, who replaced Kyle Busch for the 2023 season, faced thorough out his carer has been his hyper aggression, on and off track. TRD was always confident that the on-track aggression would end once he gained enough experience; they were worried about how he will behave off-track.

His fight with Sam Mayor and controversial comments made on live TV about his fellow drivers in the Xianity series last year. But Gibbs has shown maturity in his rookie season, and Wilson claims he is personally proud of how the No:54 Toyota Camry driver has handled himself.

Forget about the on-track stuff. As a human being, we’re incredibly proud of how he has handled himself professionally, genuinely. And that, to me, is more important because of the on-track stuff, we always knew he was going to be just fine, and I think that his level of progression this year has been terrific,” Wilson said.
