“I thought we lived in America no one can force underwear”- Twitter goes crazy as NASCAR updates its rule book mandating drivers to wear fire-resistant underwear’s

A crash during Daytona 500

One of the major issues the Next-Gen cars had in the 2022 Cup season was the fire hazards the drivers were part of. Cup series’ Ford Mustang drivers were the most affected group, with veteran Kevin Harvick as the primary example. The pilots were furious at NASCAR and were quick to call out the sanctioning body’s incompetency in handling drivers’ safety.

NASCAR made some updates to the car to make it safer, but it still has a long way to go. The organization has now introduced a rule change keeping drivers’ safety in mind. They have updated the dress code, and now drivers are mandated to use fire-proof helmets, underwear, and socks. This is to ensure that drivers have a better survival chance if they find themselves in an unfortunate situation.

Though mandating underwear seems a bit awkward, the rule concerns the extra layer of clothing piolets wear in their groin area as part of their driver’s suit. On average, the special piece of clothing has a 5.1-millimeter thickness and can withstand heat during a blast for 10-15 seconds more.

NASCAR isn’t the first organization to mandate the use of such clothing. The open-wheel counterpart, Formula 1, implemented such a tough rule change regarding jewelry and underwear last season. The racing body has yet to specify details about how officials will confirm that a driver is using SFI or FIA-rated fireproof clothing.

Some fans shared their genuine concerns over the safety of drivers in the 7th gen car.
