Daytona is favoring defending race winners in 2023. The Truck series race on Sunday witnessed Zane Smith defending his win after the race was cut short due to rain. RCR driver Austin Hill has continued the trend by defending his Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner. 300 win after flipping race leader Sam Mayor. It marked the third Xfinity Series race triumph for the 21 years old.
JR Motorsports driver Sam Mayer and Justin Allgaier were fighting for the lead with just the final lap of overtime. Hill tried to squeeze in between the teammate, which resulted in Mayer crashing into the outside wall and the car flipping upside down. Hill was able to edge the No:1 JRM car and surging John Hunter Nemechek. Race officials declared Hill after a long deliberation.
“As soon as the caution lights came on, I thought I had it, but it was so close. To get back-to-back here at Daytona, it’s really special. That’s three wins for me now, two in the Xfinity and one in the truck here. We came from the back two different times. I hope everyone enjoyed it. It was such a blast. I had so much fun. We won at Daytona! Let’s go!” Austin Hill said after the win.
Hill also expressed his concern for Sam Mayer in his post-race interview. He said, “When I saw the No. 1 (Mayer) and the No. 7 (Allgaier) get together, I just went to go squeeze them, and the one came down, he started getting loose, and then you can’t lift—it’s last lap. I hope Sam is OK, man. That was a heck of a flip there,”.
The win will help Hill double down his championship credentials and hopefully win the title in 2023, which has one of the most promising drivers in recent years. It will also help him cope with the failure to qualify for the Daytona 500 after, in his own words, “a dump mistake” cost him the spot.
